Christmas Vacation

SmokeScreeners Rating:

Year of Release: 1989

MPAA Rating: PG-13

Director: Jeremiah S. Chechik

Distributor: Warner Bros.

This film was reviewed by Dr. Barry Hummel of QDREF on January 21, 2012.

Additional Comments:  "Two of the film's stars, Beverly D'Angelo and Randy Quaid, were both seen smoking.  But the big winner was Bill Hickey as Uncle Louis, who not only smoked a cigar in most of his scenes, but he managed to set fire to the Christmas tree and leaking sewer gas.  While this certainly demonstrated the negative impacts of smoking, it was balanced by the fact that he managed to smoke around four young children."

What Women Want

SmokeScreeners Rating:

Year of Release: 2000

MPAA Rating: PG-13

Director: Nancy Meyers

Distributor: Paramount Pictures

This film was reviewed by Dr. Barry Hummel of QDREF on November 19, 2011.

Additional comments: "The film's star, Mel Gibson, accounted for half of the smoking in this movie.  Oddly, most of the smoking took place before he had his amazing transformation into the more "sensitive" man.  As soon as he was transformed back, he started smoking again.  What's the message behind that artistic decision?"

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York

SmokeScreeners Rating:

Year of Release: 1992

MPAA Rating: PG

Director: Chris Columbus

Distributor: 20th Century Fox

This film was reviewed by Dr. Barry Hummel of QDREF on November 12, 2011.

Additional Comments:  "Most of the smoking was done by background extras on the streets of New York; unfortunately those characters smoked around the very young lead, Kevin (Macauley Culkin).  Once again, Kevin used a video of an old movie to trick the hotel staff, and that prominent video clip also included a smoking character."
